Job steps, hazards & controls

#Job stepHazardsControls
01Identify the circuits
  • Working on the wrong circuit
  • More than one source feeding equipment
  • Trace and label the circuits before starting
  • Check drawings for backfeeds, generators and solar
02Lock out and verify
  • Shock or electrocution
  • Someone re-energizing while you work
  • Turn off and lock out with your own lock and tag
  • Test the meter on a known live source, test the circuit, then test the meter again
  • Treat it as live until it tests dead
03Do the work
  • Arc flash if anything is still live
  • Cuts from wire and sharp edges
  • Arc-rated PPE for any live testing; insulated tools
  • Qualified people only for live work, with a permit
04Restore power
  • Energizing with people still working
  • Faults on startup
  • Everyone clear and accounted for; each person removes their own lock
  • Covers back on before energizing; stand to the side of the panel
